Correlations Between Parenting Efficacy and Child¡¯s Sensory Processing Functions in Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain the parenting stress while raising children with autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing function disorders and to investigate the relationship between parenting stress and sensory processing function disorders.
The subject of this study is a Pearson correlation coefficient analysis of 20 mothers with children suffering from autism spectrum disorders, in Gwangju and Jeonju. The SPSS 21.0 program was used for statistical analysis.
Parenting stress for those having children with autism spectrum disorder had a high positive correlation with abnormalities in auditory processing and touch processing functions, which are a sub-domain of sensory processing functions (p<.05, p<.01). Additionally, there was no correlation between sensory modulation function and behavioral and emotional responses.
Based on the results of the study, the implications for parental education and counseling interventions reduce parenting stress while raising children with autism spectrum disorder were discussed.
